Welcome to the Boulder Culinary Gardeners website. We are an informal network of gardeners interested in sharing experiences, learning and teaching sustainable, environmentally friendly, responsible gardening practices adapted and suited to the Colorado environment. We welcome gardeners of all experience levels.
Although we incorporate many approaches to gardening, our mission is to garden without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Particular attention is paid to the health of pollinators such as honeybees and wild bees. Whether you choose green manure (cover crops such as legumes) or animal manures, our collective experience may help you find quality soil amendments.
Winter classes include a basic roster to get any gardener started: growing seeds indoors, gardening 101, gardening without chemicals and a guide to native plants in the garden. These classes are free and held in branch libraries. Anyone may attend. On our website we share information and personal experiences about our challenges and triumphs in a windswept garden. And we urge any gardeners to make their gardens hospitable to beneficial insects, birds and all the wild creatures we depend upon to pollinate our fruits, vegetables and native plants.
Every May, the Boulder Culinary Gardeners plant and garden sale offers a wide selection of vegetables, herbs and flowers grown by organic gardeners from the Boulder area.
On most of these pages you will receive some information that will help you make choices. Our recommendations are thrifty, too. By substituting row cover for an arsenal of chemicals you will save money and invest in a product that can be used year after year. By rejecting chemical fertilizers or commercial cow manure you avoid a saline (salt) induced sterility. Using mulch and drip irrigation saves on water. Gardening with the health of our bees in mind will increase the production of fruits and vegetables without spending a penny.
And if you have children, they will enjoy learning about science close-up–just outside the back door. Gardening is a joyful pastime and well worth the time and effort to get started. We’ll help you on that journey.
